The checklist (above) is a basic tool. Every several years, boards should engage in a comprehensive and thorough assessment process and then employ the results to do performance improvement action planning. One of the best methods available for doing this is GAP, The Governance Assessment Process; offered by The Center for Healthcare Governance, American Hospital Association [full disclosure: under contract, I designed the GAP assessment tool for CHG, although now receive no financial benefit from its sale].
